Killochan Castle

Killochan Castle is a manor house near the Scottish village of Old Dailly in the Council Area South Ayrshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. Furthermore, the associated stables are independently classified as Category A structures.

history

There was a predecessor to Killochan Castle either on the same site or, more likely, a short distance upstream. Remains of this building have not yet been found. A plaque above the entrance to the stair tower shows the year of construction 1586 (construction start on March 1st). Due to the massive masonry, however, there are as yet unconfirmed assumptions that at least fragments are of an older date and that the date only refers to the stair tower, which could have been added later. The board shows Ihone Cathcart as the client.

description

The mansion is located on extensive grounds on the north bank of the Water of Girvan about one kilometer northeast of Old Dailly. Killochan Castle has an L-shaped floor plan. On the southeast edge of the three-story building, a round tourelle emerges, which is unusual for this type of building. In addition, this tower is provided with an unusually high battlement reinforcement. The entrance area is located on the square stair tower in the inner corner of the building. The hall is on the first floor, while the floors above are divided into numerous bedrooms and lounges.

stables

The associated stables date from the 18th century. They consist of two parallel, elongated buildings that are connected to one another by a wall with a gate entrance. A flat wing connects the southern of the two buildings directly with the manor house. The facades of the two-story stables are plastered with pink Harl . The buildings end with hipped roofs . The connecting wall is embossed .
