The Kilwinning Abbey ( German : Abbey Kilwinning ) is a former abbey of Benedictine in the Scottish town of Kilwinning in the Council Area North Ayrshire . In 1971 the ruins were included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. The facility is also classified as a Scheduled Monument .

history

The identity and origin of the Holy Winning have not yet been clarified. It could be an Irish monk named Wynnin , Finnian, or Finan . Other sources speak of Scottish or Welsh origins. This is said to have built a church on the site of the later monastery in the 6th century. The founding of the monastery goes back to Richard de Morville and is dated around 1162. By the end of the century, the construction of the facilities was well advanced, but was then canceled. Another phase of construction at the beginning of the following century was probably never completed.

The history of the monastery was relatively uneventful in the following centuries. Around 1530 there were 16 monks living there. During the Scottish Reformation in 1560, a Protestant group led by the Earls of Argyll , Arran and Glencairn drove out the remaining monks. With the exception of the monastery church, which served as the parish church until a replacement building was built in 1775, the facilities fell into disrepair from that point on and had been in a ruinous state by 1591 at the latest.

description

Access to the chapter house

The former monastery is located in the center of Kilwinning. Only a few wall fragments have survived. This includes a fragment of the south gable of the transept of the monastery church with three lancet windows and the recess above for a rose window . Furthermore, the entrance to the chapter house on its west side has been preserved with a longer section of wall. Architecturally, there are clear parallels to the sister monasteries Kelso Abbey and Arbroath Abbey .
