Family coat of arms of the Earls of Glencairn

Earl of Glencairn was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland , named after the parish of Glencairn in Dumfriesshire .

The Earls' family seat was Finlaystone Castle near Kilmacolm in Inverclyde .

Award and history of the title

The title was created on May 28, 1488 for Alexander Cunningham, 1st Lord Kilmaurs . He was the hereditary chief of Clan Cunningham . As early as 1463 he was given the subordinate title of Lord Kilmaur .

Since the childless death of his great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandson, the 15th Earl, on September 24, 1796, both titles have been suspended. Among other things, because the original award document no longer exists, no family member has so far succeeded in having their inheritance claim to the title effectively recognized by the Committee for Privileges and Conduct of the House of Lords .
