Kilmaurs is a village of 2,833 people in the East Ayrshire Council Area in south-west Scotland . It is east of Carmel Water and about three kilometers north of Kilmarnock on the A735 .

history

Kilmaur's origins are south of Carmel Water at a building called Kilmaurs Place, which was not built until around 1620. At this point or in the immediate vicinity, however, various other buildings such as residential houses and fortifications have stood since the 12th century. Even today there are in Kilmaurs a church dating back to 1170. Kilmaurs Place was the seat of the Earls of Glencairn and received the Royal Charter (certificate of incorporation) 1527 .

Economy and Infrastructure

The most important industries of Kilmaurs in the 19th and early 20th centuries were, besides agriculture (grain mills), the manufacture of knitted goods and the coal mines in the vicinity. Today, in addition to knitted goods, mainly dairy products are made in Kilmaurs. Since the 1960s, Kilmaurs has grown steadily due to the influx of commuters as a suburb of the Kilmarnock and Glasgow catchment areas .

Culture and sights

Kilmaurs Place was built in the 17th century on the site of Kilmaurs Castle, which has now completely disappeared. Previous residents included the 9th Earl of Glencairn and the Montgomeries of Eglinton . Today Kilmaurs Place is privately owned but can be viewed from the public park in which it is located.

Rowallan Castle is close to Kilmaurs and was built in its present form by the Corbett family at the beginning of the 20th century. It is in close proximity to the ruins of a Muirs castle from the early 16th century.

Personalities

The Scottish doctor and biologist John Boyd Orr (1880–1971) was born in Kilmaurs. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1949 .
