Cunningham is the name of a Scottish clan that originated in Ayrshire . The clan has no chief recognized by the Lord Lyon King of Arms , which is why he is considered the Armigerous Clan .
history
Hervey von Cunningham was born in 1263 by Alexander III. rewarded with the lands of Kilmaurs for his bravery at the Battle of Largs , and by marriage the estates were expanded. In 1488 the title of Earl of Glencairn was created. The family traditionally frequented the circle of the powerful, the 4th Earl was a friend of the reformer John Knox , and the 9th Earl was after the restoration to the Lord Chancellor appointed. The 14th Earl was a patron of the Scottish national poet Robert Burns . Since the childless death of his brother, the 15th Earl, in 1796, the title of nobility and chief dignity have been suspended.
The clan's motto is Over Fork Over .
