Armigerous clan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An Armigerous Clan is a Scottish clan , family, or name that is registered in the Court of the Lord Lyon but is not or has not been led by a chief. An Armigerous clan has a family coat of arms , is or was not led by a chief who is / was recognized as such by Lord Lyon. Before 1745, each chief had his own coat of arms, but not each is on the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland (established in 1672).

In Scottish heraldry , family coats of arms were only used by chiefs, heads of families, families or namesake. In Scotland, a clan is considered " noble society " and "clan chief" is an honorary title . With this title the chief transferred the noble status to his clan. Since Armigerous Clans do not have or did not have such a chief, they are not recognized as "noble society" and have no legally recognized status in Scottish law .
