Court of the Lord Lyon

The Court of the Lord Lyon , also briefly Lyon Court is that in Edinburgh resident for Scotland authorized state arms register ( Heraldic Authority ). Clans are also recognized and registered by the Lyon Court. For heraldic matters in England , Wales and Northern Ireland , but also in the Commonwealth of Nations is the College of Arms in London responsible.

The Lyon Court is chaired by the Lord Lyon King of Arms . Until the end of 2013 this position was held by David Sellar . In January 2014, Joseph John Morrow was named as his successor. Another permanent employee is the Lyon Clerk and Keeper of the Records . Both are supported by up to six Heralds and Poursuivanten (Herald's assistants) in their administration.

The office of the Lyon King of Arms is first mentioned by a deed of appointment from King Robert Bruce in 1318. There has been a Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland since 1672 .
