David Sellar

William David Hamilton Sellar MVO ( February 27, 1941 - January 26, 2019 ) was a Scottish lawyer , genealogist and heraldist . From 2008 to the end of 2013 he was Lord Lyon King of Arms as head of the Court of the Lord Lyon in Edinburgh .

Life

Sellar attended Fettes College in Edinburgh and studied history at the University of Oxford and law at the University of Edinburgh . In 1966 he was admitted as a solicitor , two years later he moved to the law faculty at the University of Edinburgh. Since then, his work and research have focused on the law of Scotland and the history of Scotland .

He has published on the Lords of the Isles and the history of many Scottish Highland clans . Sellar was Vice President of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland , the Scottish Society for Antiquities, and a member of the Heraldry Society of Scotland , the Heraldry Society of Scotland.

In 2001 Sellar was named Bute Pursuivant of Arms in Ordinary . He was Lord Lyon King of Arms and the only Scottish 2008 King of Arms . By virtue of this office he was responsible for the management of the Scottish coat of arms . Unlike the English heraldic kings , the Scottish heraldic king also has judicial functions in the field of heraldry, which are performed in the rest of the United Kingdom by the Court of Chivalry .

As Lord Lyon, Sellar was one of the Great Officers of State in Scotland; for this reason he was entitled to the title The Right Honorable . Sellar was also secretary of the Thistle Order . He was also responsible for conducting state ceremonies in Scotland. In this respect, his protocol duties corresponded to those of the Earl Marshal in England. His annual duties in this capacity included opening the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland .

Sellar was married and had three children. At the end of 2013 he resigned from his position.
