Clan Buchanan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Buchanan ( Scottish Gaelic language : Na Cananaich [ nə ˈkʰanənɪç ]) is the name of a Scottish clan descended from Anselan O'Kyan , a son of the King of Ulster . In the 13th century , the Scottish King Malcolm II granted him lands on the east bank of Loch Lomond , where the clan has been based since then.

history

The Buchanans were famous for their martial arts and supported Robert the Bruce in the early 14th century. In the early 18th century, parts of the clan migrated to Ireland to avoid hunger and religious persecution because of their Presbysterian beliefs. From there, many later emigrated to the United States. Well-known descendants of the clan include George Buchanan , teacher of Maria Stuart and Jacob VI. , James Buchanan , the 15th President of the United States ; and Ken Buchanan , world lightweight boxing champion, who fought in clan-colored pants.

The motto of the clan is Clarior hinc honos ("Heller therefore the honor").
