Butter is the name of a Scottish clan that originated in Perthshire . The earliest mention of the clan comes from the year 1331. The former ancestral home Faskally House is located in the southern Highlands north of Pitlochry in what is now the Unitary Authority Perth and Kinross . The clan has no chief recognized by the Lord Lyon King of Arms , which is why he is considered the Armigerous Clan .

Origin of name and description

The name is derived from the Gaelic word "bathar" (= road for cattle ). Changes over the centuries resulted in different spellings of the name. These include: "Buttir", "Buttyr", "Buttar", "Butter", "Butters of Gorma (c) k / Gormo (c) k) / Pitlochry ".

Coat of arms and motto

The motto of the clan is DIRIGET DEUS (= God will guide).

The motif apparently relates to the practice of archery. The coat of arms of the Butter clan consists of two hands holding a bow and a drawn arrow. The members of Clan Butter were Septs of Clan Murray of Atholl .

Mention of clan members in historical sources

  • William Butyr and Patrick Buttir are mentioned in 1360 contributions from Gowrie, Perthshire .
  • William Butter received the Gormack and Tullyedzie estate in 1390.
  • William Butter inherited Finlay Butter from Gormack in 1434.
  • Johnne and Williame Buttir are charged in 1554, along with over 30 other people, of the joint murder of Williame Drummond and his son.
  • John Buttir von Gormok was denounced as a rebel in 1654.

A secured line of the “Butter of Gormock” clan begins with Patrick Butter.

Former possessions

Clan Butter (of Gormock) appeared in 1331 as landowners in the District of Perthshire . In 1778 Henry bought Butter from Pitlochry , Faskally. The Faskally House was built as the seat of the Clan butter on the farm. In the years 1829–1831 the house was extensively rebuilt and expanded. The year 1831 is carved in stone above the entrance door. The family coat of arms adorns the ceiling of the entrance hall.

In the 1950s the house was used as a school for the forestry commission. Laboratories for the State Inland Fisheries Agency were later housed there. Currently, Faskally House is a Christian school campus.
