The kinetoplast is a structure of the kinetoplastea , a class of unicellular organisms. It is an area of ​​the mitochondria that is rich in deoxyribonucleic acid (kDNA). The kinetoplast lies close to the basal body of the flagellum and is connected to it via the cell skeleton .
