Kinghorn Castle is an abandoned spur castle over Pettycur Bay in the town of Kinghorn in the Scottish county of Fife .
history
In the days of the House of Dunkeld , the Scottish monarchs often visited the royal castle. King Alexander III rode back to Kinghorn Castle to meet his new wife Yolande von Dreux , but fell from his horse and was later found dead on the beach of '' Pettycur Bay ''. This happened in March 1286 and sparked a succession dispute that led to the Scottish Wars of Independence .
Today nothing is left of the royal castle. The area was built with modern houses.
