The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Biały Bór ( Polish: Cerkiew Narodzenia Przenajświętszej Bogarodzicy ) is a total work of art, designed and built from 1992 to 1997 by Jerzy Nowosielski . The church serves the parishioners of the Greek-Catholic denomination , whose ancestors were forcibly relocated to Pomerania from the south-eastern Polish areas after 1945 as part of the Vistula campaign .

The church was built in collaboration with the architect Bogdan Kotarba. Stylistically, it is reminiscent of the architecture of three-aisled early Christian basilicas.

In the middle nave there is a small dome with the image of the Pantocrator , between the aisles there are rows of black, round columns. Three colors dominate inside: dark green walls and ceilings, white partitions and red door frames.

The iconostasis contains only three icons: the crucifixion above the royal door, Christ and Mary. In the center is a bright red tetrapod - a low table that plays an important role in the Eastern liturgy.

During important church festivals, the main facade serves as an iconostasis with the icons of the archangels and the face of Jesus as a handkerchief of the Veronica (Veraikon).

The unusual shape of the church was initially not recognized by the faithful, who expected a conventional church with an onion dome. Only the high marks of the art critics and the multitudes of tourists who admired the unusual structure changed the attitude of the local residents.
