Jerzy Nowosielski [ nɔvɔˈɕʲɛlski ] (born January 7, 1923 in Cracow ; † February 21, 2011 ibid) was a Polish painter who originally belonged to the Lemken tribe .

Life

As a child, Nowosielski was already familiar with Ukrainian icon painting in Lemberg and East Galicia, Poland , which left traces in the form and content of his pictures throughout his entire artistic career. Born into a family of the Greek Catholic faith , he later converts to the Orthodox faith.

In 1940 Nowosielski became a student at the Cracow School of Applied Arts . During the war he learned the art of icon painting and helped with fresco painting in the Ukrainian church in Bolechów .

In 1945 he began studying painting at the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts under Professor Eugeniusz Eibisch , which he did not finish until 1961. A year later he took over the management of a chair at the academy. In 1976 he was appointed professor and remained in the teaching post until 1993. At that time Nowosielski painted pictures with female figures, gymnasts, swimmers and still lifes. The influence of icon painting became visible in the two-dimensional design of the picture surface with clear outlines. Some pictures seem almost abstract, others go in the direction of hyperrealism .

As early as the 1950s, he was engaged in fresco painting in numerous Roman Catholic and Greek Catholic churches. Then he rejected the secular theme and devoted himself almost exclusively to icon painting. He also studied Orthodox theology. His frescoes and icons can be seen in many places of worship. On the fringes of his activity Nowosielski also dealt with the stage design. In Biały Bór he created a small Greek Catholic Church, the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary , his integral work, designed himself from the overall concept to the smallest detail. In Krakow, Nowosielski created a Greek Catholic chapel of Saints Boris and Gleb in the building of the Metropolitan Cathedral Chapter on Kapitulna Street.

Jerzy Nowosielski was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Jagellon University of Krakow .

Nowosielski was Poland's representative at the Venice Biennale of 1956 and on the São Paulo Biennial in 1959 in Brazil . In 1988 he was awarded the Jan Cybis Prize . Works by Nowosielski can be found in the national museums in Wroclaw , Gdansk , Kielce , Krakow , Poznan , Szczecin and Warsaw , as well as in the Łódź Art Museum , the regional museums in Olsztyn, Białystok, Bydgoszcz, Częstochowa, Radom and Zielona Góra, the Upper Silesian Museum Bytom , the Silesian Museum Katowice and other local museums.
