Church meeting in Skänninge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Skänninge church meeting was held around March 1st, 1248 to regulate church affairs in Sweden .

prehistory

In 1164, with the establishment of the Archdiocese of Uppsala, Sweden became a separate ecclesiastical province , but the relationship between church and state was at times tense due to the troubled political situation in Sweden. In 1248 a church meeting was called in Skänninge , attended as representatives of the church by the papal Cardinal Wilhelm von Sabina and the Swedish bishops and abbots , while the imperial administrator Birger Jarl , whose residence Bjälbo was only a few kilometers from Skänninge, led the state's negotiating group .

course

The cardinal took on a mediating role in the current domestic political disputes, supporting the policy of Birger Jarl, who in turn supported the church's demands for a clear legal separation of church and state and the introduction of canon law for the church. The introduction of celibacy for priests was also an important result of this church meeting.
