The church

The Kirchle is in the last ice age washed-stone natural monument. The gorge is located about eight kilometers southeast of the city center of Dornbirn in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg . The church is no longer traversed by water and is located at about 820  m above sea level. A. (about 300 m above the Alploch Gorge ). This rock-overhanging, dry gorge is about 65 m long and up to 13 m wide and about 20 m deep. The gorge can be hiked through along the former water flow.

The Kirchle was created by flowing, diverted melt water from the glaciers at the end of the last ice age and became dry after the valley glaciers had melted.

The name is derived from the shape of the washouts ( Vorarlberger / Alemannic : Kirchle = small church). The cliffs narrowing towards the top and the washed-out, former pits of the church partially form a kind of church vault. About 70 m above the church there is a stone arch, which is easily recognizable from the inside (not accessible).

From time to time cultural events take place in the church, where the special ambience of the gorge z. B. is used for concerts.
