As a cherry wood or cherry wood is wood of wild cherry and sweet cherry ( Prunus avium ) denotes an up to 25 meter high tree , which and Iraq naturally present in large parts of Central Europe to Turkey as well as in North America, the Indian subcontinent and North Africa was naturalized. It is mainly used as veneer wood for interior construction and especially as furniture wood. Cherry wood does not play an economic role as firewood.
properties
The sapwood of the cherry tree is yellowish-white, while the heartwood has a yellow-reddish to red-brown color, partially interspersed with green stripes. The color of the sapwood and the core differ from each other. The annual rings are clearly visible, the annual ring boundaries are marked by medium-sized pores that form a clear ring. The color can darken considerably, especially when exposed to light, and take on a warm, light golden yellow to dark red brown tone. Chemical treatment can also achieve a shade close to that of mahogany .
The wood has an average density of around 600 kg / m³ and is therefore a medium-weight type of wood. It is medium-hard to hard with a Brinell hardness of 31 N / mm² when loaded at right angles. The elasticity is very good, the swelling comparatively low.
Cherry wood is very durable in the dry, this is especially true when used in interior construction. It can be processed very well and, due to the homogeneous wood structure, easily polished, whereby very smooth surfaces can be achieved. The durability of the wood against fungal attack is moderate (durability class 3), against rodent beetle attack ( Anobium spec. ) The wood is very endangered.
Cultivation and availability
The bird cherry is not cultivated as a forest tree for forestry purposes. Rather, it occurs sporadically in the edge area of deciduous forests and is accordingly used extensively. Since the trunk wood tends to core rot , the trees are felled around the age of 70, the maximum age is around 100 years.
use
Cherry wood is an important precious wood in furniture construction as well as in the past. It was particularly popular in furniture construction of the Biedermeier and Art Nouveau styles because of its warm red tones. To this day, it is also mainly used for wall and ceiling cladding and paneling . It is also used to manufacture various small pieces of furniture and accessories.
It is not used as firewood on an economic scale, even if individual branches and processing residues can be burned in the house .
