Lucas, der Ant Bully (Original title: The Ant Bully ) is an American computer animation film from 2006 based on the children's book The Ant Bully by John Nickle . Directed by John A. Davis , who also wrote the script and co-produced the film.

action

Ten-year-old Lucas Nickle is moving into a new neighborhood. He has no friends here and is bullied by a gang of young people. The leader of the gang makes fun of Lucas because he is shorter than him and he cannot defend himself against him. Lucas then takes his frustration out on even smaller creatures: the ants in his garden. He shoots these and their anthills with his water pistol.

When his parents Fred and Doreen go on their honeymoon, he is left on his own with his big sister Tiffany and grandmother Mommo. He doesn't get along very well with his sister and his grandmother is obsessed with the idea that aliens might kidnap her. The pest exterminator Stan Beals takes advantage of the parents' absence and talks about his services to the young Lucas: Lucas signs a contract so that Beals should destroy the ants in the garden. After Lucas is again bullied by the leader of the gang, he uses a hose to put the entire ants' burrows under water, causing destruction and chaos.

The ant Zoc then makes a magical potion that Lucas is given one night. This shrinks Lucas to the size of an ant. The shrunken Lucas is brought into the ant den. There many ants demand a severe punishment for the "destroyer"; some want to eat him up. But the wise queen condemns him to training and working in the ant burrow so that he can learn about the ants' way of life. The ant Hova volunteers to teach him. Lucas becomes friends with the ants over time.

When the pest controller he hires shows up, he helps the ants fend off them and thus save the colony from certain death. The queen ant named him an honorary ant and gave him the name Rokai . Zoc gives Lucas the antidote, after which the boy returns to his normal size. Lucas is happy when his parents return. With the ants he learned that you can only be successful if you stand together and tackle tasks together. He and the children from the neighborhood now defend themselves together against the attacks of the bully and can put him to flight together.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films wrote: “The computer-animated cartoon offers exciting and educationally instructive entertainment and, through the choice of its subject, suggests that the local lawn is a jungle full of dangers. Some scenes could be too scary for smaller children. "

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film was a disappointment for anyone who had hoped for an improvement in the recently declining quality of animated films. The plot consisting of moralizing and strung together action scenes is an "insult" for every educated person. Berardinelli mentioned the numerous stars involved, but was surprised that the little-known Zach Tyler got the lead role.

Cinema magazine wrote that the only film intended for children was "entertaining, fast-paced, funny and personable". It contains "considerable (if not outstanding) animations and a good portion of toddler action" as well as "a lot of weird joke".

“Unlike the ant hits“ Antz ”and“ Das große Krabbeln ”, this video game-style spectacle is all about weird wit and wild action. For toddlers, there is also a lesson in social skills. "

Julia Roberts was nominated for the Kids' Choice Award in 2007 for her speaking role . John Debney was nominated for the 2007 Annie Award for film music .
