Francisco Toledo SJ , also Francisco de Toledo Herrera (born October 4, 1532 in Cordoba , Spain; † September 14, 1596 ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

After studying philosophy in Valencia , he studied theology in Salamanca . In 1558 he entered the Jesuit order . From 1559 to 1563 he taught philosophy in Rome. In 1569 he was called to the papal court by Pope Pius V, where he worked as a preacher for 24 years. Toledo was created cardinal on September 17, 1593 by Pope Clement VIII . As a cardinal priest he was assigned the titular church of Santa Maria in Traspontina on October 11, 1593 .

He died on September 14, 1596 and was buried in the Patriarchal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore .
