Kismet is a free passive WiFi sniffer for detecting wireless networks .

Passive means that Kismet does not send any requests to the networks, but rather reads the packets that are sent by them. For this purpose, the WLAN card is switched to the so-called "monitor mode". This can u. a. so-called "hidden" (E) SSIDs can also be found.

It is subject to the GPL and runs under GNU / Linux , NetBSD , FreeBSD , OpenBSD , macOS and also Windows . For the latter, however, you need Cygwin . Together with a GPS receiver and a script that comes with the Kismet, the networks found can be mapped. Kismet can also cooperate with the free software GpsDrive . The networks appear in real time as waypoints on the map displayed by GpsDrive.

Application area

Kismet is not only used for wardriving , but can also be used to check your own WiFi for security and to determine the signal strength. It can also be used as a wireless intrusion detection system (IDS).
