Kiuic
Kiuic (pronounced "Kivik"), sometimes also Kaxil Kiuic , is a rather small Maya site in the north of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico .
location
The archaeological site of Kiuic is located in the Yucatan scrub forest about 35 km (as the crow flies) or about 80 km (driving distance) southeast of Uxmal at an altitude of about 15 to 25 m above sea level. d. M.
history
There is still no information about the beginning of the settlement of Kiuic; the place was suddenly abandoned by its residents sometime in the 9th century - rubstones and ceramics were left behind. The square was rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th century; However, more extensive uncovering and excavation work did not begin until 2000.
buildings
The rather small Maya site today consists of three relatively well-preserved palaces ( palacios ) in the Puuc style, a few other stone buildings, an unfinished plaza and a largely destroyed temple pyramid on the highest point of the site. Noteworthy is the fact that some structures appear to be unfinished; the city seems to be still under construction, i. H. possibly as a result of a military attack, to have been abandoned by its residents.
