The Grünenwald bascule bridge was a movable road bridge in Switzerland . It was used from the road to Engelberg and led over the Stansstad-Engelberg Railway .
The construction of a movable bridge was chosen because the railway had an incline of 25% at the intersection with the road and it was not possible to create a level crossing over the rack railway . When a train came, the two segments of the bascule bridge were folded up and at the same time the two-pole catenary of the three-phase current operated railway was lowered. In 1964 this bridge was replaced by a conventional overpass in the course of the new construction of the railway line to Engelberg.
