Children playing gossip

procedure

Often rhymes are recited or game songs are sung, which is why the gossip games are sometimes also called "rhyming games". Mostly, clapping games are played in pairs with the partners facing each other and clapping their hands in different variations. Depending on skill and mutual understanding, you can also clap on the thighs, on the cheek, above the head or on the left, on the right or together, cross each other, etc.

A rhythmically recited nursery rhyme , which was partly handed down or invented and reminiscent of counting rhymes , serves to keep the clapping speed. Some clapping games are carried out in addition to clapping hands, depending on the rhyme, also by performing movements of the respective verse. A well-known gossip game with a nonsense text is, for example, "Em pom pie" .

distribution

Such games seem to be common around the world. In 1963, G. Koch wrote in the accompanying material to his film research document Micronesians (Gilbert Islands, Nonouti), Children's Games :

Usually two girls sit opposite each other, sing an old nursery rhyme and clap their palms together, in alternating order, but in the rhythm of the song. Each of these songs has a different beat sequence, which can also include beating one's own body parts.

example

At Mülers it burned, burned, burned,
there I went - ran, ran, ran,
there came a politician, zist, zist,
who wrote me on the list, list, list,
the ruse fell into the mud, mud, mud,
my name was gone, gone, gone,
I ran quickly home, house, house,
and the story was over, over, over.
