Klaus Orth

Klaus Orth (* 1953 in Bensberg ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 2004 to 2009 he was mayor of Bergisch Gladbach .

Orth holds a degree in economics and was the managing director of drug help Cologne gGmbH.

In 1970, at the age of 17, he joined the SPD. Since 1989 he has been a member of the Bergisch Gladbach city ​​council . In 1991 he became chairman of the SPD city council group and was deputy mayor from 1994 to 1999. He ran for Mayor of Bergisch Gladbach in the North Rhine-Westphalian municipal elections in autumn 2004. With his election victory in the runoff election on October 10, 2004 - with 62.4%, he achieved one of the best results for an SPD candidate in the country - he replaced the CDU politician Maria Theresia Opladen as mayor. On August 30, 2009 Orth lost the election against his competitor Lutz Urbach from the CDU .
