Klaus "Pollo" Urmitzer is a former German national basketball player .

career

The 1.93 meter tall Urmitzer played basketball in the youth division of the USC Heidelberg and was runner-up with the club's A-youth before he was part of the Heidelberg men's team in 1963/64. Its most prominent feature was its bounce. “I was the first white, German, less than two meters tall player with completed professional training who managed a dunking,” said Urmitzer - known for his humorous sayings - once.

Following the 1964/65 season, he moved to the upper league competitor MTV Gießen , became German champions with the team in 1965, returned a year later to USC Heidelberg and became German champions with the team in the spring of 1966.

In 1969 Urmitzer left the USC again in the direction of MTV Giessen. In January 1972 he was seriously injured in a car accident that occurred on the way back to an away game in Heidelberg and was hospitalized for three months. After recovering, he returned to the field at MTV Giessen, but had to end his Bundesliga career around a year after the accident. In addition to his professional obligations as a dentist, Urmitzer also played in the regional league team of Heidelberger SC.

National team

In April 1964 Urmitzer made his debut in the West German national team in the game against the GDR . By 1971 he played 14 internationals and took part in the autumn of 1965 and 1971 in the European Championship.
