The MTV 1846 Gießen (men's gymnastics club CR 1846 Gießen ) is one of the largest sports clubs in Hessen and one of the oldest sports clubs in Germany. Over 2300 members are organized in 30 departments. In the basketball Bundesliga , the professional team of the Gießen 46ers , which has been outsourced to a corporation, plays .

The sports facilities are located around the clubhouse of MTV 1846 Gießen. The MTV has two soccer fields, the more northerly place was completely renovated in 2007 and now has an artificial turf field and athletics facilities. Today's MTV 1846 Gießen was created in 1957 through the merger of the Gießen gymnastics club, founded in 1846, and the Gießen men's gymnastics club, founded in 1855 .

The basketball department of MTV 1846 Gießen was founded in 1937. It is the second oldest basketball department in Germany after VfL 1848 Bad Kreuznach . Since 1993 the professional team Gießen 46ers has been outsourced to a corporation . This has been playing in the Bundesliga again since 2015/16 . The MTV Giessen club continues to provide four men's teams and junior teams.

American football

The American Football division has existed since 2000 when loaner yesterday Lightnings joined MTV 1846. The first team has been playing under the name Gießen Golden Dragons since 2016 in the German Football League 2 , the second highest German league.

ice Hockey

After the Second World War , an ice hockey department was established in TV 1846 Gießen.
