Small and large Katthagen

Little Katthagen

The Große Katthagen and the Kleine Katthagen in Rostock are two historic streets in the southwest corner of the city center of the Hanseatic city .

Both streets were documented for the first time under the name Katthagen in 1594, and in that year a distinction was first made between large and small Katthagen. The interpretation of the street name is uncertain. The basic word -hagen could indicate the remote location of both streets. The eponymous Katten could have been stones that were used as ammunition in the catapults of the nearby south-western city wall . Both streets are part of the former Rostock Neustadt .

Little Katthagen

He bends over the Apostelnstraße from the Kröpeliner road to the south and then changes its course to the east. At the bend you can see the gable of a farm building of the monastery of the Holy Cross . On its northern section, the Kleine Katthagen leads past the former monastery church of the Kreuzkloster, today's university church , and leads to the monastery courtyard .

Great Katthagen

The Große Katthagen actually consists of two streets. The western section begins south of the Kröpeliner Tor and runs parallel to the preserved southwest section of the Rostock city wall with its lovely Wiek houses .

The second section is the first street to bend south from Kröpeliner Straße and at the end of its course it meets the first section.

While the Kleine Katthagen survived the bombing raids of late April 1942 unscathed, the area enclosed by the two sections of the Großer Katthagen suffered some damage.

Because of their proximity to the Rostock city wall and the Holy Cross monastery, Kleiner and Großer Katthagen represent one of the most picturesque corners of Rostock city center.
