The Apostelstraße in Rostock is a street in the historic city center of the Hanseatic city . It connects Lange Straße with Kröpeliner Straße in a north-south direction , but the connection with Lange Straße is only passable for pedestrians. It is part of the former new town .

history

The history of Apostelstrasse was closely linked to the parish church of Neustadt, St. Jacobi . This Jakobikirche was located between Apostelstrasse in the west and its parallel street, Pädagogienstrasse , in the east. The huge tower of this church building rose on the west side.

In 1473 Apostelstrasse was first mentioned as In vico versus dotem . The latter dotem, in the nominative dos, referred to the furnishing of the Jakobi parish with residential houses. In German it was called Straße nach der Dos (Jakobikirche). The name Apostelstraße was derived from the facade decoration of a house on the southwest side of the street that showed the 12 apostles . In 1701 the new street name became official. The not very representative buildings on Apostelstrasse, only booths, were largely owned by St. Jacobi. At the beginning of the twentieth century, a modern steel- framed department store was built on the corner of Kröpeliner Strasse , which took up almost the entire west side of Apostelstrasse.

In the nights of bombing at the end of April 1942 , this department store was badly damaged, the Jakobikirche burned down and lost its baroque spire and roof. In 1947 vaults and most of the outer walls collapsed, and in 1960 the Jacobi ruins were finally torn down. The department store on the west side of Apostelstrasse has been restored in a simplified manner. In the course of the monumental reconstruction of Langen Strasse, Apostelstrasse was shortened, and since then the back of the houses on Langen Strasse can be seen at its northern end.

Today Apostelstraße is dominated on its west side by the Jakobi-Passage shopping street , while a park in the east has been reminding of the monumental building of St. Jacobi since 2003.
