The Pedagogienstraße in Rostock is a street in the historic center of the Hanseatic city . It connects Universitätsplatz with Langen Strasse in a north-south direction . It is connected to Apostelstraße via the streets Zur Himmelspforte and Bei der Jakobikirche . It is approved for motor traffic.

The pedagogy street is part of the former Rostock Neustadt , which had the street structure of a grid network. In this network, it is one of the streets that connect today's Lange Strasse with today's Kröpeliner Strasse or Universitätsplatz. First mentioned in 1493 (that is, quite late), it originally had the Latin name In vico versus paedagogiam , which meant something like "road to the pedagogy". This pedagogy , which gives it its name, was a kind of student dormitory, as Pädagogienstraße was in close proximity to university facilities such as the Auditorium Magnum and the White College . This pedagogy had its heyday in the 16th century. It was not until 1684 that the German name Pedagogienstraße became binding by a council resolution. In addition to the university, the close proximity to the Jakobikirche in Rostock was also decisive for the history of Pädagogienstraße, the straight choir end of which rose on the otherwise undeveloped west side of the street. You also got to the churchyard of St. Jacobi, which was south of the church, via Pedagogienstrasse. Accordingly, numerous professors of theology lived in Pedagogienstrasse.
In the four-night bombing of the British Air Force at the end of April 1942, Pedagogienstraße was completely destroyed, the nearby Jakobikirche burned down and lost its spire. After a nearby bunker was improperly blown up, the nave of the church collapsed in 1947 and the rubble was removed. Throughout the 1950s, the church tower and the remains of the choir stood in ruins, and neither was it secured or rebuilt. In 1960 these ruins were finally removed. A park has been a reminder of the sacred building since 2003. Pädagogienstraße itself was provided with simple residential buildings on its southern section, while the rear of the former Centrum department store was built in the north, which still houses a department store, the underground car park of which can be reached via Pädagogienstraße.
