Kleomenes (military leader)

Kleomenes (Greek Κλεομένης), the son of General Pausanias , was a Spartan military leader and the great-grandson of King Cleomenes I from the house of the Agiads .

In the summer of 427 BC Instead of his nephew, the still too young King Pausanias , Cleomenes led the Spartan army against Athens . His mission was to weaken Athens and to delay Athens' intervention in the power struggle over Mytilene . Cleomenes invaded Attica and devastated the country. When he ran out of supplies, he withdrew. Despite its success, Mytilene fell to Athens.
