The Bassarbowski Monastery ( Bulgarian Басарбовски манастир ), actually Monastery of Saint Dimitar Bassarbowski , is a Bulgarian Orthodox cave monastery near the city of Ruse in northeastern Bulgaria . It bears the same name as the nearby village of Bassarbowo . Strictly speaking, it is a rock monastery located at an altitude of about 35 meters above sea level. At the foot of the monastery, the Russensky Lom River flows north towards the Danube . The oldest written record that has been preserved comes from the 15th century. Here the monastery is mentioned in an Ottoman tax register .
