The Augustinian convent dates back to the Corporis Christi chapel donated in 1331 to commemorate a miracle of the host . The founding family transferred the patronage of the chapel in 1404 to the city of Cologne, which has since appointed an incumbent priest. The chapel visited by pilgrims was considerably enlarged in 1421–23 by foundations from citizens of Cologne. With the support of Archbishop Dietrich von Moers, an Augustinian canon monastery was established here in 1426. As a result, a larger church was built, the main altar consecration took place in 1435. The convent was accepted into the Windesheim congregation in 1451 or 1453 . For enlarging the monastery grounds was 1,454 land from Gereon pinacquired and the nave was extended with chapels added on both sides. A large chapel to the south was consecrated to the seven joys of Mary in 1503.

In 1787 the convention was abolished by the Cologne council with the consent of the papal nuncio. The church and monastery initially served as a prison and hospital. In 1802 the church was auctioned and in 1805 closed. In 1822–36 a prison was built on the monastery grounds by the Prussian state.
