The Surb Grigor Church

The monastery Juchtak ( Armenian Ջուխտակ վանք ) is a former convent of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the northern Armenian province of Tavush . The origins of the monastery go back to the 11th century. Today it is a ruin.

Location and description

The monastery is located about three kilometers northwest of the city of Dilijan in the Dilijan National Park . There it stands in the center of a forest clearing between two small tributaries of the Aghstew River near the Dilijan mineral spring .

The monastery complex consists of two churches, from which the complex owes its name. Juchtak means twin churches . Surb Grigor Church ( Gregory the Illuminator ) was probably built in the 11th or 12th centuries.

Another church, Surb Astwazazin (( Armenian Սուրբ Աստվածածին , "Holy Mother of God "), western Armenian Surp Asdwadsadsin , other transcriptions Surp Astvatsatsin, Surb Astuacacin ), stands in the west of the monastery area. In it there is an inscription that states the year 1201 as the year of construction: In 1201, in the Amirdom of Lascha and the Khanate of [...], I built Hayrapet, abbot of the Surb Petros monastery, Surb Astwazazin with the hope that At every sunrise a mass for me and one for my brother Schmawon and in all congregations for my parents is held in both churches. In 2015 the monastery got new doors.

There is a small cemetery around the churches.
