The former Kilcar Monastery , which belongs to the Diocese of Raphoe in Ireland , was founded by Bishop St. Carthach in the 6th century. Until 1609 it was managed by the McGillaspecke family.

The monastery is located on a small plateau of a steep mountain slope to the northwest above the village of Kilcar , which is named after this church: Cill Charthaigh , d. H. "The Church of St. Carthach". The church was in ruins as early as 1622, but it remained in use until 1828 when a new parish church was built down in the valley. Only the west gable with a passage is left that is bordered with beveled stones that form a pointed arch. The rectangular church was quite narrow inside with a width of 6.5 meters. The side walls are only preserved at 5–6 meters. A plaster can be seen on the inside of the still standing walls .
