Mehringen Monastery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The monastery Mehringen is a former Cistercian monastery in Ascherslebener district Mehringen in Salzlandkreis .

history

The monastery was founded in 1222 by Oda von Mehringen. It was made by Pope Gregory IX. Subordinated to the Sittichenbach monastery in 1232 . The monastery was built in the Romanesque style, later parts also in the Gothic style, such as the church belonging to the monastery. Near the church were the cloister buildings, including the sisters' house, the workhouse and a school. The provost's apartment, the hospital, the external school, the library, the pharmacy, a house for guests, the apartments for the servants and the agricultural buildings were located outside of these closed buildings.

The improvement in handicrafts and agriculture, which enabled Mehringen to become relatively prosperous, had a positive impact on the population. In 1525 the monastery fell victim to the Peasants' War.

Current

The former monastery buildings were later used as an estate and, after the Second World War, as an LPG site. The former monastery church, two houses, a barn and two other buildings are still preserved, but they have fallen into serious disrepair.
