The monastery Peshtera is dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra dedicated ( Bulgarian Пещерски манастир "Свети Николай Мирликийски" / Peschterski manastir "Sveti Nikolaj Mirlikisky") and is located about 70 km southwest of the Bulgarian capital Sofia , around 1.5 kilometers east of the village Peshtera in of the municipality of Zemen .

The monastery in the Orechovets region in the Mraka region, which is why it is still known as the Orjachowo monastery (Оряховски манастир / Orjachowski manastir) or the Mratschki monastery (Мрачки манастир / Mratschki manastir).

The monastery was mentioned for the first time in the Mraka document (1348), which was made on behalf of the Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Alexander .
