The Monastery of Santa María de la Real ( Sancta Maria de Regali ) in Palma de Mallorca is a former Cistercian abbey in the Balearic Islands in Spain .
history
As a subsidiary of Poblet Monastery in 1236 at the request of Pope Gregory IX. in the monastery founded by King James II of Aragon, newly conquered Kingdom of Mallorca, belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . For the foundation, Count Nuño Sans gave his estate Alpich de Esporles and other goods in Deià and Manacor to the order. The monks first settled in Sa Granja in the Sierra de Tramuntana, but three years later they moved to the area of the city of Palma. The Balearic philosopher Ramon Llull lived in the monastery, which housed one of the most important libraries in Mallorca, at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries . In 1820 the Cistercians had to leave Mallorca, but returned in 1823. The monastery was finally made in 1835 the monastery suspension ( disentailment ) under the government of Juan Álvarez Mendizábal victim. The monastery initially fell into disrepair, but in 1897 the Sacred Hearts gave it to the missionaries, who restored it.
Buildings and plant
The cloister, which has been restored several times, dates from the 16th century. The church is also renewed.
