Tejharuyk Monastery

The monastery Tejharuyk ( Armenian Թեժառույք , Georgian თეჟარუიქი even monastery Taicharukhi or Taicharkhavank called) is a former convent of the Georgian Orthodox Church of the Apostles in the central Armenian province of Kotayk . It was founded in the 12th century. Today it is abandoned and is owned by the Armenian state. The Office for Monument Protection is responsible for the protection and maintenance of the relatively intact church and the monastery, the buildings of which have been largely destroyed.

location

The monastery is located fifteen kilometers northwest of the city of Hrazdan and immediately south of the village of Meghradzor, which with its 2,500 inhabitants is larger than other villages in the region. There the monastery stands on a wooded mountain above the right bank of the Marmarik River.

Building description and history

Remnants of the surrounding wall

Although the historical name of the complex is Tejharuyk, it is called Taicharukhi or Taicharkhavank Monastery by the villagers and pilgrims. The Chalcedonian ( Georgian Orthodox ) monastery complex consists of a church, two chapels and a gawit . Originally it was completely surrounded by a wall, which is only partially preserved today.

According to an inscription in Georgian on the south facade, Ivane Zakarian had the main church built between 1196 and 1199. Ivane and his brother Zakare were grand viziers at the court of the Georgian Queen Tamar and the commanders in chief of the Armenian-Georgian army that fought against the Seljuks in the 1190s . They conquered most of Armenia and ruled there from the 12th to the 14th centuries as Georgian vassals.

The main church is a single-nave church with a semicircular apse. There are side chapels on either side of the apse. A staircase on the right side of the church room leads to the dome. Two further side chapels are built in front of the church in the south and north. The bell tower borders the nave to the west. Inside and in the front of the Gawit, the church holds several graves of Zakarid vassals.

Today there are no more services in the monastery, although pilgrims visit the church frequently and locals go to church on Christian holidays to light candles and pray. Some traditionally tie a ribbon to the "tree of dreams". The buildings are slowly decaying. The roof in particular is damaged, so that rain can get into the building.

The foundation walls of the chapel

A few meters from the church, the foundation walls of a small chapel, which consisted of a single room with an apse, have been preserved.
