The parish and monastery church of the Assumption of Mary and St. Radegundis in Gars am Inn is the church of the Redemptorist monastery Gars and the local Catholic parish church.

history

The Romanesque monastery church, built in the 12th century and later rebuilt and renewed several times, was demolished after 1658 due to the damage suffered in the Thirty Years War . The new building, begun in 1661, was used for church services just over a year later and was consecrated in 1690 by the Archbishop of Salzburg. Planning and execution were in the hands of the builders from Graubünden, Giovanni Gaspare Zuccalli and Domenico Cristoforo Zuccalli . One of the earliest baroque church buildings in old Bavaria was built, a wall pillar church with surrounding galleries.

Furnishing

While in 1679 one of the southern side chapels was equipped with stucco by Giovanni Battista Brenni due to a foundation , the planned stuccoing of the entire church was not carried out due to lack of funds. The frescos were done in 1712/13 by Benedikt Albrecht (around 1655-1730) and Johann Eustachius Kendlbacher (1660-1725). The ceiling paintings of the nave (partially revised in 1895/98) show the founding of the Gars monastery (above the organ), Saint Cäcilia and Saint Radegundis , the Rosary Madonna (a brotherhood in Gars had been dedicated to their veneration since 1623) and the patron of the order Augustine ; the main images are accompanied by smaller symbolic representations (emblems). The ceiling picture in the choir was created by Martin Anton Seltenhorn (1741–1809) from Kraiburg in 1777/78 ; it shows the worship of the Eucharist by the four continents.

The imposing high altar, which was built in 1693, contains a monument as early as 1663 by Duke Albrecht VI. donated painting of the Assumption of Mary by the Munich court painter Karl Pfleger (1618–1688); The larger-than-life side figures by the Wasserburg sculptor Georg Ferdinand Hartmann depict Saint Joseph with the baby Jesus and Saint Joachim (with his daughter Maria ).

Of the other altars, the eastern pair of altars erected in 1704 in honor of Saint Augustine (left) and Saint Radegundis (right) should be emphasized. The Virgil Altar from 1710 (on the left) with a beautiful altarpiece by the Munich court painter Johann Degler contains the reliquary of Blessed Kaspar Stanggassinger in its cafeteria . On the opposite altar (from 1745) a late Gothic Pietà is venerated.

There are also a number of medieval tombstones that have been erected on the church walls since 1695. The Felix chapel adjoining the choir to the south is a separate, intimate church space. The relics of the Roman saint came to Gars from the Priscilla catacomb in 1672; soon a flourishing pilgrimage developed to them. In the middle of the 18th century, they were taken in a typical Baroque manner and put together to form a skeleton. Since then, Saint Felix has been sitting in an altar structure by the Landshut carver Christian Jorhan (the elder) (1727–1804).
