history

The Knights of the Black Cross emerged in the context of the presidential election in 1868 and were an organization similar to the Ku Klux Klan. Like the Klan, they wore white robes and white caps, but without the distinctive hood. The black crosses were sewn onto the robes. Above all, they served the purpose of not being assigned to the Ku Klux Klan in court. The Knights saw themselves as a political organization that supported the democratic candidate Horatio Seymour . Each member swore an oath on the United States Constitution . The Knights did not appear outside of the presidential election campaign.
