Bone (tool)

Due to the material used ( cast aluminum is relatively brittle), the bone cannot withstand very high loads

Bone (also bone wrench or ten-hole wrench ) is u. a. the slang term for a compact tool from the wrench category . The bowl, usually made of a cast aluminum alloy , has roughly the contours of a long bone (dog bone), which is where the name comes from. A slightly narrower bridge ends on both sides in heads with mostly hexagonal recesses of differently sized widths across . Hexagon bolts or nuts can be turned in up to ten sizes (usually SW 6 – SW 15). Until the 1990s, the bone was widely used as a bicycle tool because of its low weight and space-saving versatility . Bones are hardly suitable for modern bicycles, as they mainly use hexagon socket screws . Instead, multi-function tools are used here .

Trivia

Folding legs , which are used in bookbinding and leather processing, are also colloquially called "bones".
