Knockhall Castle is a ruined castle near Newburgh in Aberdeenshire , Scotland .

history

The castle was built in 1565 by Lord Sinclair of Newburgh as a residential tower at the mouth of the River Ythan . In the 17th century it came into the possession of Clan Udny , who moved into Knockhall Castle in 1634. In 1639 the castle was damaged when it was taken for the Covenanters by the Earl Marischal . This occupation was limited in time, so that the Burgs returned to the Udny clan. This inhabited Knockhall Castle until it was destroyed by fire in 1734. The clan moved back to its original residence, Udny Castle, and finally gave up Knockhall Castle.

The walls are still in good condition today and give an idea of what the castle looked like in its heyday.
