history

Kornmarkt Madonna

In 1718 the statue created by Peter van den Branden was placed on a pedestal in the middle of the square. The background to this is the religious disputes between the mostly Reformed population in Heidelberg and the Catholic Elector Karl Philipp . The statue of Mary stands in the tradition of the specifically Catholic figures of Mary and saints and is to be seen as a measure of the counter-Reformation propaganda, which in Heidelberg was promoted primarily by the Jesuits . For the Reformed Heidelberg population, this list was tantamount to a provocation.

In the northwest corner of the Kornmarkt there was a fountain, the so-called milk fountain. When Hauptstrasse was widened around 1830, the fountain was moved to the center of the square and the sculpture was integrated into the complex as a fountain figure. The base was equipped with gargoyles and surrounded by an octagonal basin. Between 1870 and 1890 the large water basin was replaced by a square base with three smaller shell basins. After 1900 the small surrounding green area was abandoned and the area was framed by a stepped platform. In 1938–40 a copy of the statue was made for the Kornmarkt, the original is in the Kurpfälzisches Museum .

description

Mary with a gilded crown of rays, a wreath of stars and a lily scepter carries the baby Jesus on her left arm and supports it with her right hand. It stands on a likewise gilded globe, which is surrounded by a snake dragon, which is carried by four putti on a cloud formation, whereby the clouds are penetrated by golden rays. The baby Jesus raised his right hand in a gesture of blessing, with the left he thrusts a lance with a cross into the head of the dragon snake.

The iconography of this depiction follows the depiction of “ Maria vom Siege ”. This image motif was spread across Europe in the 17th century in the course of the Counter Reformation. In Heidelberg, for example, the fight against the dragon snake should be discussed as a fight against the Protestant “erroneous belief”. Other attributes of the sculpture point to different aspects of the cult of Mary: the halo with the 12 stars and the lilies refer to the immaculate conception of Mary . The crown and scepter symbolize Mary as Queen of Heaven, the trampling of the snake and the crescent moon at Mary's feet are references to the woman of the Apocalypse . The putti in the clouds stand for Assumption , the rays in the clouds are the rays of grace that Mary grants the world.

The following inscription can be read on the base:

NON STATUAM AUT SAXUM SED QUAM DESIGNAT HONORA
STILL STONE STILL PICTURE STILL PILLARS HERE
WE HONOR THE CHILD AND MOTHER
