With the title of his memoir, he alludes to his well-known press conference, at which he declared that there are "known acquaintances, but also unknown unknowns" (" There are known knowns ... But there are also unknown unknowns").

The journalist and Oscar winner Errol Morris has under the title The unkown known (dt. The unknown Known produced) a film documentary about Donald Rumsfeld.

Rumsfeld justifies the Iraq war with the removal of Saddam Hussein . He accuses the then German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and French President Jacques Chirac of complicity in the escalation, as they gave Hussein the impression that they could avert a war. For the lack of weapons of mass destruction, the former CIA chief, George Tenet, is to blame for providing false information. More troops for the occupation of Iraq from 2003 to 2011 would have made sense, but were not requested by the high military. Rumsfeld himself was planning a quick exit from Iraq, according to the book. Secretary of State Colin Powell and the Governor of Baghdad, Paul Bremer , campaigned for a longer commitment. Rumsfeld also claims that, contrary to what the media claims, Powell never made any internal reports critical of the war.

Rumsfeld regrets that George W. Bush did not accept two of his resignation requests and describes his statements about " old Europe " as unsuitable. On the other hand, he was amused by the excitement.
