Lake in the sand pit

The Kochschen Sand and Kieskuhlen in Itzehoe , also called Kochsche Kuhlen or Kochkuhlen , are a former sand and gravel mining area.

The operator was the sand-lime brickworks Itzehoe W. Koch & Co. KG, founded by Willi Koch in 1927 and based on Oelixdorfer Straße. After the gravel pits were exploited, some of them were used as landfill; with the increased environmental awareness and stricter environmental legislation, it was dissolved. The sand pit has developed naturally over the past few decades and is home to some rarer plant species. In the middle of the sand pit, a lake has remained that has no above-ground inflows or outflows.
