In shipbuilding and on-board operations, a cofferdam is an empty cell between two rooms that have to be safely separated from one another on board of all types of watercraft. The coffer dam is arranged between drinking water tanks or living rooms and oil, ballast water and interchangeable tanks, among other things. The partition walls are formed by bulkheads , floor walls , tank ceilings and side beams in the ship group. The arrangement is specified in the classification regulations of the classification societies.
