The Koh-i-Elburz (also Gory Al'burz, Koh-i-Alburz, Kohe Alburz, Kuh-e Alborz, Kuh-i Elburz, Kūh-e Alborz, Kūh-i Elburz , Persian کوه البرز Alborz-Berg ) is a mountain ridge in the Afghan province of Balkh . The ridge extends south of the town of Balch , which is about 20 kilometers northwest of Mazār-i Sharif . It is a tertiary , elongated ridge, with steep flanks to the north and south. The chain is interrupted by short gorges cut by the Schadyan and Marmol streams.

The name Alburz loud the Aryana Encyclopaedia or the dictionary of Dehchoda from the two Avestan or Middle Persian -Wörtern al or hr (ال) for mountain andبرزfor highly composed.
