Colonial cruiser

From 1880 to 1945, warships were designated as colonial cruisers in the fleets , which were specially designed for use in the overseas colonies of the European powers. Most of these ships were created by converting older cruisers . The construction of new colonial cruisers was less common.

Since these ships were intended for use in tropical areas, they had more spacious, well-ventilated accommodation and better sanitary facilities than other ships of their time. The Italian colonial cruiser Eritrea (built in 1936) even had a freezer for the food. Because they were used in security and patrol duty, these ships were usually quite slow and weakly armed. Because of their low combat power, colonial cruisers were therefore of no importance to the war fleets. After the First World War , the tasks of the colonial cruisers were mostly performed by other warships. Occasionally, however, they remained in the fleet lists until the end of the Second World War .
