Kolossi

Kolossi is a low castle a few kilometers outside the city of Limassol in the Republic of Cyprus .

history

The castle was of great strategic importance for the administration of southern Cyprus and also served as a warehouse for sugar, one of Cyprus' most important export goods in the Middle Ages. The original castle was probably built by Frankish troops in 1210. The country was conquered by King Hugo III. handed over to the Knights of the Order of St. John . From 1306 to 1310 the Templars were the owners of the castle under the usurped rule of Amalrich , before it fell back to the Johanniter. The current castle was built in 1454 by the Johannites under the Grand Commander Louis de Magnac. Today the residential tower and the former sugar mill as well as parts of the surrounding walls are still preserved.

The neighboring church of Agios Eustathios served as the castle chapel .
