The headquarters at Grosse Markt 22 in Saarlouis is a building in the French functional baroque style .

In the years 1680 to 1683 a government building was built according to Vauban's designs . It was two-story and had a mansard roof ; the central axis was emphasized by a large portal with a balcony. Thomas de Choisy was the first governor to use this official residence. Under the Prussians , the building was used as a command post, as a staff building for the Graf Werder regiment and as the headquarters of the army administration. From 1927 it housed the post office.

In the 1960s, the dilapidated condition of the buildings on the Großer Markt was discovered. While the Ludwigskirche opposite the commandant's office was demolished except for the tower and facade and replaced by a concrete structure, the commandant's office itself was demolished between 1973 and 1976 and rebuilt according to the original plans. The building on the southwest side of the central square of Saarlouis is now also used as a commercial building.
